measi's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- fireballs in the sky Well, we got up. 3:30 a.m. to go watch the Leonid show. The report was that New England was in for a treat. Not like last year's (which I missed), but still somewhere around 1,000 per hour at peak. Last night after grocery shopping, we headed to a few spots in our general area to find the perfect viewing spot. There was a graveyard in Stoughton, but [erich] felt uncomfortable going there. We checked into the middle school in Randolph, which had a pretty clear view. We decided, however, on a dark office park in Canton right off Route 138-- close to home, and we wouldn't have to deal with potential tresspassing issues in the evening, since we were standing in an abandoned field and parked on a deserted road. We stood out there for about 35 minutesand probably saw around 24 or so. It was still beautiful-- the ones we saw were the big ones leaving smoky trails behind them. But between the bright moon and a bit of foggy haze, it wasn't as the astronomers had claimed. Still, I had never seen a meteor shower before, however "light." Poor Erich was freezing his ass off, and I was perfectly willing to just stand out there in the cold, my face to the sky. Around 4:30, we jumped back in the car and headed home to catch a couple more hours of sleep. Now only about five or six hours later, I wonder if I dreamed the whole thing... 10:23 a.m. - 19 November 2002 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
