Blizzard

There's something I find incredibly romantic about a snowstorm-- the falling snow, the peaceful crisp picture that the blanket of white creates over everything. I figured that this weekend was going to be one of those-- great gentle snows to help brighten the holiday mood and make everything Christmasey.

What I'm thinking of as I watch the snow literally whipping around in the air tonight? "The Long Winter" by Laura Ingalls Wilder... her descriptions of the howling wind as blizzads buried her town in South Dakota. We are in the middle of a Nor'Easter. Tonight's forecast (all night) is for a bonafide blizzard-- sustained winds over 35 miles an hour for well over three hours with barely a quarter-mile visability... like this:

Creepy, eh? That's a photo shot of Route 128 from today.

And oh, how the snow is piling up. Because of the winds, it is drifting in uneven patterns, but the forecast for our area is somewhere between 16-24 inches of snow. The drift against our sliding glass door already is well over a foot-- the cats can no longer look outside because the snow is over their heads. One of our bedroom windows is completely whited out. I've heard the plows coming by frequently, but they can't keep up with what's blowing around. And our house lights have flickered a bit.

The stable pane of the sliding glass door in the living room had become slightly disjointed on the outer side of the pane, allowing a decent-sized open-air crack to the outdoors. The draft today was vicious. I've put some packing tape over it for the time being-- it's a horribly temporary fix (the tape is already soaked), but with how wet it is, nothing could really be done to secure it right now... we'll have to call maintenance for the complex once the storm is over. All I can say is how thankful I am that I have some very

And we're supposed to get snow all through tomorrow. Want to see how fun it is? Turn on the Patriots game tomorrow afternoon-- it'll still be snowing, according to the weather report. Fun fun fun.

And it's not winter yet, folks-- not technically, anyway. I have to wonder what this winter has in store for us.

Pardon me as I stare out in awe at Mother Nature for a bit. All I can say is "God DAMN!"
