measi's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- hell didn't freeze over, but we'll take it I'm sleepy but happy about the Patriots winning the Superbowl. [thefinn]'s dislike of football aside (which I can understand to a point, especially when dealing with people like he had to yesterday), winning the Superbowl was possibly one of the only things that could boost the spirits of a very pissy Boston. September 11th did a lot to make this city even moodier and grumpier than its usual cranky but loveable self. Perhaps it's just me and my knack for catching onto general moods, but there's been a feeling of shame floating around here since then, due to the wonderful security force at Logan airport. The Red Sox sure as hell didn't help matters with their abyssmal slump into their usual state of disrepair. Our screwed-up governor hasn't helped much, either, with her cluelessness about what Massachusetts residents both need and want. And then there has been such a slew of horrid, depressing stories as scandal after scandal with abusive priests in the Catholic church get revealed, that this city and region has just been whacked senselessly with a rataan cane to keep them in a foul mood. So while I got to sleep much later than my exhausted brain wanted last night, I understood and relished why... the Patriots won the Superbowl. I was in the home city. So I didn't complain about the long drive up Mass Ave last night to get back to my apartment. [erich] and I laughed. He rolled down his window and high-fived people crowding the busy street. People were celebrating, they were cheering, and they were making a hell of a lot of noise. But they weren't picking fights, and it wasn't getting ugly. They were just having a damn good time... And dammit, this city needed something to cheer about for a while. 1:39 p.m. - 4 February 2002 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
